Map of the Parish

The Parish Map shows the boundary administered by Morton-On-Swale Parish Council.

Morton-on-Swale is a large village and civil Parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the A684 road about 4 miles west of the County Town of Northallerton. It is less than 1 mile (1.6 km) to the village of Ainderby Steeple. As the name suggests it lies on the River Swale.

Morton-on-Swale is "home" to two schools: Ainderby Steeple Church of England Primary School, which, notwithstanding its name, is situated on Station Lane in Morton, and which is within the catchment area of Northallerton School, which provides secondary education and sixth form facilities; as well as The Dales School, which is a special co-educational school for cognition and learning for those with severe and complex learning requirements.  Also located in the village is the North Yorkshire Social Services-Disabled Children Services Centre (CRC).

It has a Village Hall which hosts regular meetings by a range of voluntary groups. This Grade II Listed building was originally a Wesleyan Chapel, founded in 1815, but which ceased to function as such in 1928. The United Methodist Free Church, founded in 1879, finally closed its doors in 2002, and, after a brief spell as an antique retail showroom, the building has since been converted into a private dwelling, but still remains a well-known local landmark.

It also has a pub, The Old Royal George and a well-run Village Shop. Sadly however there is no longer a Post Office, which was previously accommodated in the Village Shop but closed in 2014. However, a mobile Post Office van now visits the village once a week. White's Butcher's Shop, which was one of the most reputable in North Yorkshire, closed its doors for the last time in 2022. The village Play Park, which opened in 2017, is widely regarded as being one of the finest in the area.

The village is well served by a half-hourly bus service in both directions which runs between Bedale and Northallerton from Monday to Saturday, with the first Northallerton-bound bus leaving the village at around 7.40am and the last one at around 18:15.  For an up-to-date timetable please click here.  There is also a less frequent daily service between Northallerton and Leeming village - please click here for the up-to-date timetable.
