I was born in Windsor, Berkshire, where I also went to school, before going to Durham University in 1966, after which I stayed put in The North of England, mainly in North Yorkshire, for most of my adult life. I have three children, two of whom are Yorkshire-born, and the youngest of whom was born at The Mount Maternity Home in Northallerton (now the Mount Vale Care Home). I moved to Morton-on-Swale in 2014, on returning from Portugal where I had been living for the previous 7 years, having married my second wife, Joan, the previous year. My first wife, Liz, sadly passed away in Portugal in 2011.
I worked for most of my life in IT - although we called it DP when I first started!! However, I did spend five years in the Nineties running a village store and sub-post office a few miles south-west of York, before returning to work in IT as a freelancer until I retired in 2007. During the 1980s I was heavily involved in the UK national IBM Computer Users' Association, which I also chaired in 1984 and 1985.
I am passionate about music, and have fairly catholic tastes, albeit not so much at the classical end of the spectrum. Favourite artistes are The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and Lindisfarne. Although I was a rower when I was at school (on the Thames at Windsor) my main sport is cricket, although I didn't take that up until my late 20s. I kept wicket for my local club's second XI in the York & District Cricket League (not especially well!!) and then went on to umpire in the same League for a few more years. I prepared the annual fixture schedules for several Yorkshire cricket leagues, as well as two in Lancashire, over a number of years in the 1990s and Noughties, and published The York & District League's match results every Saturday night on the League website, which I also managed - a role which continued for a further five years even after I had moved to Portugal! I played the villain in a dozen pantomimes performed by the local am-dram group in Appleton Roebuck, and also appeared in several comedies by Alan Ayckbourn and others.
I was appointed as the Parish Council's RFO in 2019, having previously served for two years as Parish Clerk.
