Many of you will be aware that North Yorkshire is one of only two counties that do not currently use average and fixed speed cameras. The good news (at least for the more safety-conscious amongst us) is that this may be about to change! At a recent meeting North Yorkshire's Chief Constable, Tim Forber, who has been in post for just over a year, made it very clear that he wants fixed and average speed cameras installed in North Yorkshire, particularly on main arterial routes, and that he cannot understand why they are not currently in place.
There is no timetable as yet for these to be rolled out generally. However the first fixed speed camera in North Yorkshire has recently been installed on a trial basis on the A64 at Sherburn, albeit apparently it was vandalised on the first day! There is of course no certainty that Morton-on-Swale would qualify as being on "a main arterial route", although this is clearly a step in the right direction, particularly in the absence of a high incidence in recent times of serious collisions (other than on the bridge!!) and fatalities in the village, which would otherwise be a major consideration in deciding on camera locations.. The Chief Constable has however said:
These are things that the community wants because particularly if you are living in a village and we have lots of villages that are just off or put through to major arterial roots and, if you are doing 35 through one of those villages it's inherently more dangerous than doing 75 down the A1, the impact that it has when you've got narrow pavements, when you've got pedestrians around, particularly when you've got young children, you might have elderly people stepping off the pavement. It is really dangerous."
